Tip #1 - Starting the game
If it's your first time starting the game, you'll have to complete a short tutorial and pick one of the three available structure decks. It doesn't really matter which one you pick. All three of them offer cards of the same value more or less. In any case, you will be able to get the other two later on in the game.
Don't worry about having a slow start. As long as you will do things right from the very beginning, you will be able to duel your way through and up the ladder and get some of the best cards and decks in the game.

Tip #2 - Don't waste your gems
Gems are the in-game currency in Yu-Gi-Oh. In order to purchase anything from the game's shop - from card packs to accessories - you'll have to spend gems.
There are two ways to acquire them. One is by completing various tasks in-game, such as clearing missions and certain chapters in campaign mode. The other way is by using real currency to purchase gems from the shop.

Tip #3 - Solo Mode Campaign is a must-play
By completing missions in this mode, you'll be rewarded with free gems, but also new cards that you very much need at this stage of the game. Cards such as Raigeki and Monster Reborn, both UR cards, offer great value as they can be used in a number of different decks.
If you are an experienced player, this might feel boring. All you probably want to do is start duelling others right away, but this is an important step that will make your game life so much easier. Also, this is a good chance to refresh your memory about certain combos, learn new ones, and maybe get a few ideas about the kind of deck you want to play.
For new players, on the other hand, this is a chance to understand basic game mechanics. How summoning works, the different types of cards, and so on. Also, you'll get an idea about how certain cards synergize to create powerful combos. This is significant as you might face some of these combos in your duels later on. The more you know, the easier it will be to counter them.

Tip #4 - Best packs to use
Once you've gathered a good amount of gems, it's time to get some new cards, and for that, you'll have to purchase packs. Not every pack is created equal. Some offer a lot more value than others, and if you don't want to waste your gems, opening the right packs is essential.
There are three bundle packs here that offer tremendous value. If you already know exactly the type of deck you want to play, check out the cards that are included in each bundle and pick the one that's best suited for you. Otherwise, it's a good idea to get all three of them, as they include ultra rare cards that are staples in various decks.
Normal packs offer no value, and it's a waste of gems. Structure decks are good only if you are planning to play the supported decks.

Tip #5 - Using Secret Packs
Whenever you acquire a super rare or higher rarity card of a certain archetype, a corresponding 'secret pack' will appear and become available for 24 hours. Secret card packs might also appear when you clear certain chapters in solo mode.
The Secret pack focuses on cards from certain archetypes. If you want to see the card list, you can select the "Card included in this pack" option.
Yu-Gi-Oh has been going on for over 20 years now, and there's a ridiculous number of cards. Secret Packs offer you a much higher chance to get specific cards for certain archetypes. This is the best way to spend your gems if you know what type of deck you want to play.
It's important to know that the ban list in Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel differs from the TCG and OCG ban lists. That means, certain decks that are not playable in these versions due to key cards being banned, might thrive here. There are many viable decks currently. Do some research online to learn about the best meta decks before you make your decision.

Tip #6 - Duelpass and should you purchase it?
Yes, definitely. Duelpass might cost 600 gems, but it will give you back a lot more. The only condition is that you play the game. As you take part in ranked duels and events, you'll collect points that you can then exchange for various items. Once you gather a set amount of points, you can level up your Duelpass and claim rewards accordingly.
