The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story, Square Enix's FMV murder mystery visual novel, set to launch on mobile in a few days

Square Enix’s latest side project release outside of their usual wheelhouse has finally been announced to be on its way to mobile devices soon. The unique, live-action adventure mystery game The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story will launch onto Android and iOS on April 25th - only a few days from now!

This sort of game falls way outside what we’d typically expect out of Square Enix. Typically, they’re off releasing new JRPGs or updating their more popular gacha games like War of the Visions or NiER: Reincarnation, so not a lot of gamers expected A Shijima Story to make its way to us mobile players, especially so soon.

Already available on consoles and PC, this blend of mystery and action-adventure takes on a more traditional approach to a visual novel style of game, utilising full motion video for each of its scenes with real-world actors and cutscenes rather than still images with character portraits.

The story of The Centennial Case sees you investigating a string of deaths within the titular Shijima family, who all died under rather odd circumstances. Our protagonist, Haruka Kagami, takes it upon herself to get to the crux of it all when she hunts down the family and begins to ask questions.

This tale will take you all over Japan, featuring real-world locales and talented actors to bring the story to life. While the FMV scenes might be off-putting to some, it does help a lot to immerse you deep within this carefully constructed narrative, making you feel as if you’re watching a full-blown film rather than a visual novel.

If that all sounds interesting to you, you can currently pre-order the game for $17.99 on the App Store at the link below. There’s no store page for the Android version yet, so Play Store users will likely have to wait for the full launch to purchase the game instead.
